hot springs, arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas, is a little town with a long, colorful history. The center of health and wellness treatments, Hot Springs, attracted people from all walks of life, from presidents and crime bosses to injured soldiers and those seeking relief from various ailments. The naturally heated springs below were piped into bathhouses, creating fierce competition between spa and hotel owners for the most extravagant location. Some are still open and are a popular attraction to guests. Others have become self-guided museums lined with historical artifacts and exhibits showing the original rooms and services. I highly recommend trying out the Buckstaff or Quapaw bathhouses. This is especially helpful after a long hike in the summer heat. The Quapaw does offer a multitude of services, but they book up a couple of weeks in advance. The Buckstaff is first-come, first-served, so whether you like to plan ahead or wing it, there are lots of options.

Lake Cathrine State Park

Lake Cathrine State Park is a quiet little getaway with lots of options. Sporting cabins, RV spots, and tent camping, there’s something for everyone. Kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking trails are a great way to explore the beautiful state park. We managed to walk all three trails, ranging in difficulty. Falls Branch Trail is a two-mile moderate hike, Horseshoe Mountain Trail will make you feel like a mountain goat, and Dam Mountain Trail has the best views. If you care about your sanity, bring bug spray and a lot of water. You may also encounter snakes, so be sure to stay on the marked trails.

Vault

The Vault restaurant was hands down my favorite part of the trip. If you’re staying in Hot Springs or simply passing through, be sure to stop and eat at this exclusive spot; your tastebuds will thank you.
